Skydive Arizona held their first ever Rookie Round Up event in April of 2013. The event was such a success we decided we just had to do it again. The second Rookie Round Up took place at Skydive Arizona on October 5th and 6th. The event format was simple, get the sport's newest members out to the drop zone to make one on one and small group jumps with experienced coaches for nothing more than the cost of their jump ticket. Over 50 rookie skydivers from 15 states and four countries came out to jump together and take advantage of the event's free coaching. In total, 23 Arizona based coaches donated their time and knowledge for the event. The volunteers included members of Arizona Arsenal and Arizona Airspeed, coaches from AXIS Flight School and Adventures in Skydiving, and Skydive Arizona's load organizers.

In addition to all the freefall coaching, the event also offered discounted tunnel time with free coaching at SkyVenture Arizona. Twenty-four skydivers were able to participate and many of them were flying in the wind tunnel for the first time.

AXIS Flight School also conducted two free canopy courses during the event. The courses consisted of a ground seminar, three hop n' pops, and detailed video debriefings for each of the participants. It was a great opportunity for the newer jumpers to expand their understanding of canopy flight and improve their landings.

Other event highlights included jumps from Skydive Arizona's DC3 and Skyvans (both a first for most participants) plus a free BBQ for the rookies and coaches Saturday night at the Bent Prop.

We hope all the rookies had a great weekend and picked up some new skills. Thank you to all the coaches and Skydive Arizona staff who helped make the second Rookie Round Up just as big a success as the first!
