Canopy Piloting Events
The 11th FAI World Cup of Canopy Piloting Standard Event featured three main rounds: speed, distance, and accuracy. The World Cup also includes a separate Freestyle Event now.
Speed
In the speed round, the goal is for jumpers to navigate their parachute through the course boundaries in the fastest time. At each gate, lasers measure the competitors’ timing and position. Times are measured to the thousandth of a second.
Did you know? Skydive Arizona was instrumental in designing the laser timing device used in canopy piloting competitions?
Distance
In the distance round, the goal is to fly as far as possible. Competitors start by dragging one foot through the water before the first gate and then continue to fly as far as they can. Distance is measured from the starting gate to the first point of contact with the ground.
Currently, the world record for distance canopy piloting is a whopping 201.57 meters by Jason Sanders.
Accuracy
In the accuracy round, the goal is to drag a foot through as many water gates as possible and then land in the accuracy zone, which measures two meters long and one meter wide. If the competitor does not finish in a stand-up landing formation, 10 points are deducted from their score.
Freestyle
In freestyle, the goal is to perform a variety of tricks and maneuvers while gliding over the water. Judges rate competitors on the complexity of tricks and how well they perform them.
