Eloy, AZ – November 30, 2024 – A team of 96 skydivers set a new head-up formation world record at Skydive Arizona during the “Stand Together” event, surpassing the previous record of 84 set in 2019. Organizers (and skydiving legends) Amy Chmelecki and Sara Curtis organized the event, sponsored by the Women’s Skydiving Network.
The training process for this record-setting jump was rigorous and systematic. Over the last 30 weeks, training camps and selections were carried out all over the world, leading into 40-way head up formations.
During the event week, five expertly piloted aircraft from Skydive Arizona, including a Skyvan and four Twin Otters, carried 111 jumpers and four camera flyers for each attempt. Participants began with sectional training: a 40-way core completed practice jumps, while other jumpers refined techniques in smaller groups through freefall and wind tunnel exercises. Once the core demonstrated proficiency, additional participants joined to form 100+ way formations.
Initial attempts involved no-grip drills at 18,000 feet, later increasing to 19,000 feet. The altitude required each participant to be provided supplemental oxygen during the ride to altitude. These practice jumps emphasized approaches, maintaining head levels, precise slot flying, and fall rate adjustments. This progressive integration ensured a cohesive and confident team ready for the record jump.
“This record represents meticulous preparation and outstanding teamwork,” said organizer Amy Chmelecki. “Every step of the process was essential to achieving this milestone.”
